My professional career began far from cameras, powered by a love of music, as I worked my way through an always upward engagement with NPR. From small member stations to popular national music programs, culminating in a visionary job creating NPR's first satellite news stream for Sirius Satellite Radio, my 20 years in the public radio world was the alchemy of music, journalism, and curiosity that set aflame my next (and current) career of wedding photography.
I came to adore the challenge of shooting weddings about a minute and a half after I started nervously shooting my very first one. The responsibility, the excitement, the pure human moments - captivated me from the start. That was 2006, and after 500 weddings, that spark and energy remain.
Aside from photography, my other lifelong passion is drumming and music - specifically improvised music. I bring the element of improvisation into all of my weddings. Using a fresh eye and the surprise of a moment, I like to make genuine, honest and organic moments. And as a lover of cinema, I am influenced by the symmetry of Stanley Kubrick.
When I'm not working, I spend time with my rescue Golden and making music in my studio.
I am located in Winchester, VA, in the lush Shenandoah Valley. I don't charge for travel in the Washington DC metro area. For travel weddings, I charge travel fees, with a reduction in photography fees to keep my services affordable.
I started my business in Cleveland, OH in 2006, and relocated to the Washington, DC metro in 2009, and rebooted my career in 2010. In that time, I have photographed over 500 weddings as lead photographer.
I consider my style to be a hybrid: part photojournalist, part documentarian. My focus is on the natural, organic and honest moments between people at weddings. Capturing unfiltered emotions in an unposed, natural way, while creating a comfortable and familial feeling among the principal actors of the day.
My base package - and by far my most popular - is providing 8 hours of coverage starting at $2,800. Ala Carte items include engagement shoots, 2nd shooter, albums - at additional, and affordable, costs.
I do not have a studio, but I do have a home office where I can meet clients. I am also fully capable and eager to use FaceTime or Skype to consult.
I am currently a member of Fearless, and the WPJA - Wedding PhotoJournalist Association. My journalist affiliations, while not precisely photographic, are shaped by being the Program Director of 3 NPR News stations - Michigan Radio in Ann Arbor, New Hampshire Public Radio, and WCPN, Cleveland. I also was the Program Director and architect of NPRtalk, the very first 24/7 stream from NPR on Sirius Satellite Radio.
I'm as passionate today as I was on my first day in June 2006. Meet with me and you'll see. Oh, I also offer this exclusive timelapse video - free of charge - as a thank you for allowing me the honor of capturing your wedding. A sample is just below.
